What is SEO or Search Engine Optimization?

The search engine then displays a large number of websites containing the information searched for, thus making it easy for the person to find the required content. With the increased use of search engines, the term search engine optimization has also become very popular. Search engine optimization or SEO as it is generally called is the process of increasing the volume of traffic to a website from search engines.
Search Engine Optimization can be used for any kind of search related to content, and images as well as search related to any search engine. SEO considers how search engines work and then optimize a website accordingly. Optimizing a website basically means to make a few changes to the HTML coding and the content so that it becomes more user-friendly. When search engine optimization is used on a website, the website can be easily indexed on the search engines so that it can be visited by more users. This increases the website’s presence on the internet by ranking it highly in a search engine. When a website is ranked at a high position in a search engine, it is believed to be accessed by a large number of visitors.
Search engine optimization was used in the early 1990s. During this period webmasters and content providers optimized their websites so that they could be indexed on the search engines with maximum content. The optimization algorithms worked on algorithms that used keyword meta-tags or information that was provided by webmaster. However, this technique was not considered very reliable because it was thought that the choice of keyword meta-tags could be inaccurate. Another problem that was faced when keyword density was used as a method of optimization was that the ranking of websites could be manipulated easily. Later with the increased number of websites, website owners realized the importance of having their websites ranked highly in search engines. Therefore, better search engine optimization algorithms were formulated. These optimization algorithms relied on mathematical calculations for website ranking. Also these algorithms relied on other factors so that ranking could not be manipulated.
Search engine optimization can also be used as an internet marketing strategy. Advertisements to market products can be placed on websites that have a high rank on the search engines. This makes people visit the company that markets the product for which the advertisement is placed. These visits can even be converted to sales many times and thus companies can earn money. However, it is not necessary that search engine optimization proves to be an efficient marketing strategy as other more effective marketing strategies may also be available.
